What is it?
Sports injuries encompass any injury sustained during physical activity, ranging from minor strains to ligament tears and fractures. Correct first aid and early physiotherapy determine the speed and quality of recovery.
Common causes
- Overuse from repetitive training without adequate recovery
- Acute trauma from contact or awkward movement
- Poor conditioning and inadequate warm-up
- Biomechanical faults in technique
- Playing through pain — ignoring warning signals from the body
Signs and symptoms
- Pain, swelling, and bruising at the injury site
- Limited range of motion
- Weakness in the affected area
- Instability (joint giving way)
- Inability to continue with sport
Physiotherapy treatment at VPARC
- Acute phase: POLICE protocol (Protection, Optimal Loading, Ice, Compression, Elevation)
- Accurate diagnosis — knowing whether it is a muscle, ligament, tendon, or bone injury
- Sport-specific rehabilitation with clear return-to-sport criteria
- Biomechanical correction to address the cause, not just the symptom
- Injury prevention programme upon return to sport
What you can do at home
- Apply ice (wrapped in a cloth — never directly on skin) for 15 minutes every 2 hours in the first 48 hours
- Use a compression bandage to control swelling
- Keep the injured limb elevated above heart level
- Do not return to sport until assessed and cleared by a physiotherapist
