The Critical Role of Post-Surgical Physiotherapy
Surgery is only half the journey. The rehabilitation that follows determines whether you regain full function or plateau with residual weakness, stiffness, or pain. At VPARC in Varanasi, Dr. Prashant Punj has overseen post-operative physiotherapy for hundreds of patients — making VPARC the preferred rehabilitation partner for surgeons across Varanasi.
Post-surgical conditions rehabilitated at VPARC: total knee replacement (TKR), total hip replacement (THR), spinal surgeries (discectomy, laminectomy, fusion), ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, shoulder replacement, Bankart repair, ankle ligament reconstruction, and post-fracture surgeries.
VPARC's Post-Surgical Rehabilitation Protocol
- Phase 1 — Protection — Swelling control, gentle mobilisation, prevention of complications
- Phase 2 — Early Mobility — Range of motion, weight-bearing progression, walking aids weaning
- Phase 3 — Strength — Progressive strengthening of the operated limb
- Phase 4 — Function — Stair climbing, returning to daily activities
- Phase 5 — Return to Activity — Full functional recovery, sport or occupation-specific training
Coordination with Your Surgeon
VPARC works within the protocols provided by your operating surgeon. Dr. Prashant Punj will align the rehabilitation programme with your surgeon's specific instructions for the best outcome.
Before Surgery: Preparing With Physiotherapy
If your operation is planned, such as a knee or hip replacement or ACL reconstruction, seeing a physiotherapist beforehand helps. You can learn the exercises you will need afterwards, practise using crutches or a walker, and build strength so recovery starts from a better baseline.
The First Weeks After Surgery
- Follow your surgeon’s instructions on weight-bearing, movement limits and wound care
- Begin gentle movement and breathing exercises as advised to reduce stiffness and the risk of complications
- Learn safe ways to get in and out of bed, use the toilet, climb stairs and walk with support
- Take pain relief as prescribed so you can do your exercises comfortably
Warning Signs After Surgery
Contact your surgeon promptly, or go to a hospital, if you notice:
- Pain, swelling or warmth in one calf
- Sudden chest pain or breathlessness (this is an emergency)
- Fever, or redness, heat or discharge from the wound
- A sudden increase in pain or new numbness
