What is it?
Low back pain is pain felt in the lumbar region — below the rib cage and above the legs. It is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints and affects people of all ages. Most episodes improve within 6–12 weeks with appropriate care.
Common causes
- Muscle or ligament strain from sudden movement or poor lifting technique
- Poor posture during prolonged sitting or standing
- Disc degeneration or herniation
- Osteoarthritis of the lumbar spine
- Sedentary lifestyle and weak core muscles
Signs and symptoms
- Aching or stiffness in the lower back
- Pain that radiates to the buttocks or thighs
- Difficulty standing upright after sitting
- Muscle spasm around the spine
- Reduced range of motion

What you can do at home
- Apply a heat pack to the lower back for 15–20 minutes to relieve muscle spasm
- Perform gentle knee-to-chest stretches in lying position
- Avoid prolonged bed rest — gentle walking aids recovery
- Practise sitting with your back supported and feet flat on the floor
