What is it?
Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine greater than 10 degrees when viewed from the back. In children, the most common form is adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). In adults, scoliosis may result from degeneration. Physiotherapy is important management for mild-to-moderate curves.
Common causes
- Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: cause unknown; genetic predisposition
- Neuromuscular scoliosis: associated with conditions like cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy
- Degenerative scoliosis: age-related in adults over 50
- Congenital scoliosis: vertebral malformation from birth
Signs and symptoms
- Uneven shoulder height or waistline
- One shoulder blade more prominent than the other
- Rib hump when bending forward
- Back pain in adults with significant curves
- Reduced lung capacity with severe thoracic curves
Physiotherapy treatment at VPARC
- Schroth method physiotherapy — the most evidence-based approach for AIS
- SEAS (Scientific Exercises Approach to Scoliosis)
- Bracing combined with physiotherapy for growing adolescents (20–40 degree curves)
- Manual therapy and core strengthening for adult degenerative scoliosis
- Monitoring and reassessment at 4–6 monthly intervals
What you can do at home
- Perform Schroth exercises as instructed — consistency is essential
- Avoid prolonged slouching which can worsen functional curves
- Wear the brace for the prescribed number of hours if bracing is recommended
- Swimming is an excellent complementary exercise for scoliosis
When to visit VPARC
Visit VPARC if your child or adolescent has been found to have scoliosis on screening. Early physiotherapy during the growth phase gives the best chance of avoiding surgery. Adults with back pain and known scoliosis also benefit significantly.
