What is it?
Neck pain and cervical spondylosis refer to pain and stiffness in the cervical spine (neck region). Spondylosis is age-related wear of the cervical discs and joints. It is extremely common — affecting most people over 60 — but can occur earlier with poor posture habits.
Common causes
- Age-related disc degeneration
- Prolonged forward head posture (mobile phones, computers)
- Whiplash or direct trauma
- Muscle tension from stress
- Cervical disc herniation
Signs and symptoms
- Neck stiffness and pain, worse in the morning
- Headaches starting from the base of the skull
- Pain radiating to the shoulder and arm
- Numbness or tingling in the hands
- Reduced ability to rotate or tilt the neck
Physiotherapy treatment at VPARC
- Cervical mobilisation and manipulation by a trained physiotherapist
- Postural re-education and ergonomic assessment
- Strengthening of deep neck flexors and scapular stabilisers
- Traction therapy for nerve-related symptoms
- Dry needling or soft tissue release for muscle tension
What you can do at home
- Perform chin tucks: gently draw your chin straight back (10 reps, 3x daily)
- Avoid cradling your phone between ear and shoulder
- Keep your screen at eye level when using a computer
- Apply warmth to the neck before gentle range-of-motion exercises
